Structured cabling for offices, campuses and data centres

Fiber Tech Solutions designs and installs copper and fibre structured cabling across Singapore — office LANs, university campuses, data centres and industrial sites. What the service covers

Structured cabling is the organised backbone that everything else in a building plugs into. Done properly it is documented, labelled, tested and certified, so faults can be found in minutes rather than days.

Scale, and what changes with it

The same trade covers a single office floor and a multi-kilometre backbone with four figures of terminations, but they are not the same job. On a floor the cost sits in access and in making good. On a backbone it sits in containment, in the joint count, and in how many of those joints have to be proved to a certifier’s limit rather than simply made.

Campus and estate work adds a third problem: the buildings are live, the routes are shared with services that are not yours, and the window to cut over belongs to somebody else’s operating calendar. That is planning work before it is cabling work, and it is where an experienced contractor earns the difference.

What a structured cabling installation involves

A cabling job is not one task. It is five, and the price of a quotation usually turns on which of them the contractor has counted.

Containment first: tray, trunking, conduit and the routes between risers and floors. This is the part that is surveyed badly and costs the most to put right, because it is decided before a single cable is pulled.

Then the pull itself, where the limits are mechanical rather than electronic — bend radius, pulling tension, and the separation from power that a copper installation has to keep.

Then termination and dressing at both ends, which is where a job starts to look like a system rather than a bundle: patch panels, outlets, cable management, and a rack that a technician can still work in two years later.

Then labelling, to a scheme agreed before it is applied rather than invented at the end.

And then testing, which is the only part that produces evidence.

Testing is the part that produces evidence

Copper links are certified to the permanent link or channel limits of the standard the job was specified to — ANSI/TIA-568 or ISO/IEC 11801, Category 6 or 6A depending on what was asked for. The certifier records length, wire map, insertion loss, return loss and crosstalk for every outlet, and either passes it or does not.

Fibre is tested two ways and they answer different questions. A light source and power meter measures end-to-end loss against a budget: it tells you whether the link works. An OTDR walks the length and shows where the loss sits: it tells you why, and where to go when it stops working. Fiber Tech Solutions is FOA-certified for splicing, termination and testing, and a handover is not treated as complete until the results exist for every link.

What is handed over

A cabling installation that cannot be maintained by someone who did not install it has not been finished. What should leave site with the job:

Ask for these in writing before award. A contractor who will not commit to them in a quotation is telling you something.

Copper, fibre, or both

Most buildings need both, and the line between them is drawn by distance and by what the link has to carry. Copper to the desk, the camera and the access controller, because it carries power as well as data and the runs are short. Fibre between floors, between buildings and anywhere the run passes 90 metres, because copper stops being reliable there and no amount of good workmanship changes that.

Within fibre the choice is singlemode or multimode. Multimode — OM3 or OM4 — is cheaper to terminate and fine inside a building. Singlemode, OS2, costs a little more at the ends and carries further than any campus will ever need, which is why it is the safer choice for anything buried, anything between buildings, and anything you would rather not re-pull in five years.

The mistake that costs money is specifying for today. Containment and backbone are the expensive parts to revisit; the electronics at each end are the cheap part to upgrade. Size the pathway and the fibre for the building you will have, not the one you are fitting out.

Cabling a building that cannot stop

Most of the cabling work in Singapore happens in buildings that are occupied, running, and not willing to be switched off. That changes the job more than the specification does: night and weekend access windows, permits, hot-work and confined-space restrictions, live risers that have to stay live, and a cutover that has to be reversible within the window it was given.
