Security systems are only as reliable as the infrastructure carrying them. Fiber Tech Solutions came to this work from the cabling side, which is why the emphasis here is on links that are tested and certified rather than on any particular brand of camera.
Fence intrusion detection uses the fibre itself as the sensor. Vibration in the fence disturbs light travelling along the cable, and the system reads that disturbance to place an event along the fence line. Because the sensing element is glass, it needs no power out at the perimeter, it is unaffected by electromagnetic interference, and it will not be disabled by cutting a power feed.
That also makes it fibre work before it is security work, which is why a cabling contractor ends up doing it. The splices, the loss budget and the OTDR trace matter here for the same reason they matter on a backbone link, and a poor joint shows up as a system that either misses events or cries wolf.
Wiegand is still being written into Singapore tenders, and it should not be. It is unencrypted, unsupervised and trivially cloned at the reader. OSDP with Secure Channel gives you AES-128 encryption, supervision of the wiring so a cut cable raises an alarm rather than passing silently, and multi-drop RS-485 so one run serves several readers.
The difference is set out at length in OSDP vs Wiegand: six security and wiring factors for installers. If a specification you have been handed still names Wiegand, it is worth raising before the cable is pulled, because the wiring differs and retrofitting is the expensive way to find out.
A camera specification runs to pages; the cabling behind it is often one line. In practice that is where the problems come from. Cameras dropping off the network at the far end of a long run, intermittent faults that follow the weather, systems that pass on handover day and degrade over a year are usually infrastructure faults, not equipment faults.
The checks worth insisting on are unglamorous: certified test results for every link rather than a ping test, sensible separation between security cabling and power services, containment sized for what it carries with room to add, and labelling that still means something when somebody returns in five years.
